      Leonard S. Whaley Sr., 70, Canastota, formerly of Westdale and Richland and brother of Pulaski resident Riva Hilton, died Monday in the State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse.

      The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Traub Funeral Home, Bridgeport. Burial will be in Oneida Lake Cemetery.

      Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Oneida American Legion Post 169.

      Surviving besides his sister are a son, Leonard S. Jr., Orwell; two daughters, Irma M. Gilbert, Richland, and Thelma Graham, Liberty Center, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Irving, Richland.

      Born in Richland March 18, 1923, a son of Orla and Maude French Whaley, he attended Richland schools. He married Janna G. Prins May 3, 1942, in Mexico, with the Rev. Cecil Plumb, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiating. The marriage ended in divorce. She died Sept. 26, 1983.

      Mr. Whaley served with the Army during World War II. He was employed with Syracuse Air Depot and later with Nine Mile Nuclear Power Plant, Scriba, until his retirement in 1981.

      He was a member of Local 545 International Union of Operating Engineers and Oneida American Legion Post 169.
