      Chalkley E. DeForest, 75, Route 26, Mohawk Hill, a native of Sandy Creek and former Constableville resident, died today at his home. He had been in ill health for the past month.

      The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Trainor Funeral Home, Boonville, with the Rev. William Mudge, pastor of the Boonville United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sandy Creek.

      Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where members of the Boonville Elks Lodge will conduct a service Thursday evening. Donations may be made to the Constableville Fire Company ambulance fund.

      Surviving are a son, Chalkley E. II, Lorraine; three daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Marlene) Myers, Constableville, Mrs. Paul (Nancy) Burnham, Mannsville, and Mrs. Ronnie (Mary L.) Dorrity, Lyons Falls; 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Eudocia Stewart, San Angelo, Texas, Helen Myers, Fulton, Dorothy Cosimeno, Rome, and Irene Elston, Kansas.

      Four sisters died before him.

      Born Oct. 7, 1918, in Sandy Creek, son of Earl Arthur and Fannie Plumley DeForest, he spent his younger years at Sandy Creek, where he attended school. He married Ava Beyette in 1939 in North Pharsalia.

      After their marriage, the couple settled in Lorraine, where they operated a farm for many years. At the same time, Mr. DeForest was employed by the Massey Machine Co. in Watertown.

      In 1958, Mr. and Mrs. DeForest sold the farm and moved to Constableville, where they purchased the Village Tavern, a restaurant and bar on Main Street. Mr. DeForest operated the tavern until until retiring in 1977, when he moved to Mohawk Hill.

      Mrs. DeForest died April 12, 1965.

      Mr. DeForest was of the Methodist faith.

      He was a charter member of the Boonville Elks Lodge, a life member of the Constableville Fire Company, a member the Constableville Fish and Game Club and an avid hunter and fisherman.
