      FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2012

Margaret Rose Rudd Chase, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 23rd, at her home in Orwell, NY.

Margaret, daughter of the Rev. Bertrand and Rose Janacek Rudd, was born on September 29, 1922 in Texas, NY. She graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1938, and from Houghton College in 1943, with a degree in Latin and NYS certification in English Education. Her first teaching positions were in Casadaga Valley, NY, and the Powerhouse District (now APW), but the majority of her teaching career was spent at Sandy Creek Central School, until her retirement in 1987.

Margaret married Harlow L. Chase on June 26, 1947, in Sandy Creek Wesleyan Methodist Church with the Rev. George Osgood officiating. The couple bought an old house near Orwell and spent many years renovating and improving the grounds.

Mrs. Chase's commitment to education was reflected in her many years as a Sunday School teacher and director of Vacation Bible School. She was an energetic and participating member of the Sandy Creek Wesleyan Church, where she served as president of the Women's Missionary Society and in other leadership positions. In recent years, she attended Vorea Community Church. She was a member of the DAR.

In addition to church, school and family, Mrs. Chase enjoyed many hobbies, including gardening, knitting and crocheting, sewing, reading, floral arrangements and photography. She was pleased to have won blue ribbons for canning, gardening, floral design and best artistic table design at the Oswego County Fair. She enjoyed entertaining her many friends and family members.

Margaret is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Kathleen Chase and the Rev. John Seib of Saskatoon, SK, and Drs. Priscilla and Glenn Thibault of Orwell. She is also survived by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Ruzena (Jeremy) Privett; Cameron, Eloise and Clarice Thibault; Caileigh and Owen Danis; by her brother Franklin (Ruth) Rudd, sister Faith Buettner, sister-in-law Ruth Knapp Rudd, and brother-in-law Fay Reid, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and members of her extended family. She was predeceased by her husband Harlow; by siblings Adelia (Gilbert) Clemons, Floyd (Araxie) Rudd, Jonathan (Ruth) Rudd, Chester Rudd, Mildred Rudd, brother-in-law Rudolf Buettner, and sister-in-law, Mildred Reid.

A celebration of Margaret's life is being planned for the spring. Burial will be at the Boylston-Sandy Creek Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Bertrand Rudd Scholarship Fund at Houghton College, Houghton, NY 13144 ( Arrangements by Summerville Funeral Home in Sandy Creek, N.Y.
