    • Newspaper Obituary - January 3, 1961 Wilkes-Barre Times Leader Evening News - Man Killed, Wife Hurt In Maryland Accident - Schulers Returning to Va. Home From Visit Here At Time Of Mishap - A 36 year old former Wilkes-Barre resident was killed and his wife seriously injured in a two car collision last night near Frederick, Md., while enroute to their Virginia home after visiting here over the holiday week end. Louis William Schuler of 615 Tazewell Road, Vienna, Va., died of a broken neck in the collision. He is the son in law of Joseph T. Kennedy, 156 Old River Road, city, assistant to the president of the United Mine Workers of America and former State Secretary of Mines. - Serious Condition - His wife, Mrs. Margaret Schuler, is in serious condition in Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md. She suffered a broken leg, fracutred shoulder and ribs. The couple's two sons, Mark, six, and Michael, three, escaped with bruises in the collision on a two-lane highway. They were listed in satisfactory condition. Driver of the second car, Ralph Leroy Martin, 24, of Frederick, was in serious condition in the hospital with a skull fracture. - Crossed Center Line - Maryland State Police said Martin crossed the center line and crashed into the southbound Schuler car. The accident happened on Route 15, two and one-half miles south of Frederick. Mr. and Mrs. Schuler and their two sons left Wilkes-Barre shortly after noon yesterday for their home at Vienna, which is about 20 miles from Washington. They had been visiting at the Kennedy home over the New Year's weekend. Mr. Schuler had been employed in the Safety Division of the United Mine Workers of America in Washington for the past eight years. The family had resided at Vienna for the past seven years. At the UMW, Mr. Schuler was assistant to Safety Director Charles Ferguson. He had previously worked for the Mine Workers during summer vacations before going there full time. - Received Law Degree - The accident victim was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of Mrs. Mary Schuler and the late Ralph Schuler. He received his early education at Girard College, Philadelphia, and was graduated from University of Scranton. Mr. Schuler studied law at Catholic University, Washington, and received his law degree there in 1947. He served the Marines during World War II and spent 28 months overseas with the Third AAA Battalion and Sixth Marine Division. He participated in the battles at Bougainville and Okinawa. Before entering service, he was employed at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Corporation, Hartford, Conn. In addition to his wife and sons, he is survived by his mother, Binghamton, N.Y.; a brother, Robert, Indiana; and a sister, Mrs. Marie Barret, Endicott, N.Y. The body will be brough to Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main Street, Plains Township.
