Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, March 1, 1888 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - In Pulaski, New York February 16th, 1888, Daniel D. Read. He was born at North Adams, Jefferson County, New York September 10th, 1808. He was ordained to the Christian ministry in 1836, and preached successfully at Belleville, Henderson, Smithville, Mannsville, Lafargeville, Perch River, Carthage, Great Bend, Lowville, and Philadelphia, New York. He also spent seven years in Wisconsin, establishing there the work of the American Baptist Publication Society, and preaching and gathering churches at Columbus and at Portage City. He was one of the prime movers for the organization of Wayland University, now known as Wayland Academy, at Beaver Dam, and, while at the university building was in progress of erection, he taught the classes, which met in the Baptist Church. In 1856 he returned to New York State, settling in Pulaski, engaged in business. Here he remained, mentally and physically active until his fatal illness, which lasted but a week. Another son and daughter passed away in mature life; Elizabeth, who died in Niles, Michigan in 1874, and Brantley P., a veteran of the war for the Union, who was killed by a terrible accident at Clarksville, Missouri, March 11, 1881, and whose widow and two sons now reside in Pulaski. Two daughters, Mrs. F. A. Clark, of Adams and Mrs. Dr. J. Chapman, of Martville, and two sons, K. H. Read, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Dr. E. W. Read of Dakota, remain to comfort their mother in her bereavement.
