George Joseph of Lehigh County said Tuesday 7-year-old Charles Kulp had been forced by an older boy to falsely admit the accidental shooting of Charles’ half sister, Patricia Broadhurst. Young Kulp Monday tearfully admitted to police he was aiming an air rifle at a wall when he fired and accidentally hit his 15-year- old sister. Joseph said Rodney Hillegas, 13, Zionsville, actually fired the shot, and threatened to beat Charles if the boy didn’t tell police he fired the .22 caliber rifle.

Wednesday, January 18, 1961 Boy, 7, Is Forced Falsely Admit Shooting Sister ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP)-Dist. Atty. George Joseph of Lchigh County saidTucsday seven-year-old Charles Kulp had been forced by an older boy to falsely admit the accidental shooting of diaries' half sister. Patricia Broadhurst. Young Kulp Monday tearfully admitted to police he was aiming an air rifle at a wall when he fired and accidentally hit his 15- year-old sister. Joseph said Rodney Hillegas, 13, Zionsville, actually fired the shot, and threatened to beat Charles li the boy didn't tell police he fired the .22 caliber rifle. The girl was shot while playing in a second floor bedroom of her Salisbury Township home. Her parents w_ere both at work. Hillegass told police Monday Charles picked up the rifle, pointed it at a wall, and then the gun discharged a bullet striking the girl. Joseph and Chief Robert Rciss of the Salisbury police questioned the story. They said that after speaking to HLUegas for several hours Monday night he broke down and admitted he fired the fatal shot. Joseph said Hillegas told them he pointed the rifle at the girl to scare her, and it went off unexpectedly. Hillegas is being held in Lehigh County juvenile detention home pending filing of formal charges, Joseph said.
