Newspaper Obituary - August 22, 1997 Post-Standard - ALTMAR MAN DIES AT ALCAN PLANT AN EMPLOYEE WORKING FOR A SUBCONTRACTOR SUFFERS A FATAL FALL. - A 54-year-old Altmar man died at Alcan's Oswego Works after being struck by a piece of machinery, falling some distance and striking a pipe on the way down, according to a deputy coroner. Roger A. Chatterton of South Albion Road, was working for Colonial Rigging, an outside contractor, according to a statement released by Alcan spokeswoman Barbara Manwaring. Colonial Rigging has offices in DeWitt and Baldwinsville. The accident happened at around 10:30 a.m. in the plant's hot mill area, Manwaring said. Chatterton was taken by ambulance to Oswego Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m., Deputy Coroner Donald Dodd said. It was not immediately clear how far Chatterton fell, Dodd said. Alcan and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the accident, officials at both agencies said. But last night neither OSHA nor Manwaring could provide other details surrounding the accident. "Alcan is saddened by the loss of our contracting firm's employee," Alcan Plant Manager Thomas Walpole said in a prepared statement. "We all share the grief of this employee's family." No one else was injured, Manwaring said. An autopsy will be performed today at Oswego Hospital, a nursing supervisor said. Alcan reported the accident within the eight hours required by OSHA, said Joan Cerio, health supervisor for the Syracuse office. Cerio could not say how long it would take for OSHA investigators to finish because each case is taken individually. A preliminary report could be done by next week, she said. Colonial Rigging President David Schedlbauer could not be reached for comment. Alcan, which is located on county Route 1A, produces rolled aluminum products.
