    • Newspaper Obituary - October 1, 1998 Watertown Daily Times - Watertown, New York - JOHN H. CARNES RAILROAD ENGINEER - John H. Carnes, 77, of 17 Niagara St., died Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, Syracuse, where he had been a patient for about two weeks. Mr. Carnes was an engineer for New York Central Railroad, later known as Conrail, retiring in 1982 after 42 years of service. Before moving to Pulaski in 1937, he lived in Williamsport, Pa., and Jersey Shore, Pa. Mr. Carnes, who served in the Navy Seabees' 87th Battalion from 1943 to 1946, was a member of Robert Edwards American Legion Post 358 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7289. He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church. Born June 25, 1921, at Pueblo, Colo., son of William E. and Mary Hopkins Carnes, he graduated from Pulaski Academy High School in 1939, and attended Michigan State College, East Lansing. He married Rita S. Stewart on May 29, 1943. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, John S., Lacona, and James W., Pulaski; a daughter, Margaret L. Carnes, Washington, D.C.; and five grandchildren. A grandson died Oct. 2, 1994. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Church with the Rev. John F. Hogan, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Foster-Hax Funeral Funeral Home.

Born in Pueblo, Colo., he lived in Williamsport, Pa., and Jersey Shore, N.J., before moving to Pulaski in 1937. He was a graduate of Pulaski Academy High School and attended Michigan State College. He retired in 1982 after 42 years with the New York Central Railroad in DeWitt. He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church, Pulaski, and a member of Robert Edwards Post 358, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7289, both in Pulaski. He was a Navy veteran. Survivors: His wife, Rita S.; a daughter, Margaret C. Carnes of Washington, D.C.; two sons, John S. of Lacona and James W. of Pulaski; five grandchildren. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday in St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial, Pulaski Cemetery. Calling hours, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9p.m. today at Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park St., Pulaski.
