    • Lewis Chapin Samson - September 1, 1846 - September 20, 1909. Military Service: Veteran of the Civil War; Enlisted August 29, 1864 at Orwell, New York, for a term of one year; $300 Bounty paid by the Township, $600 Bounty paid by Oswego County; Mustered in September 23, 1864 as a Private in Company E, 189th Regiment New York Volunteers Infantry; Served in the engagement at Five Forks; Mustered out May 30, 1865 with Company near Washington, D. C. with rank of Private. Son of Asahel and Rebecca Margaret Clark Samson. Husband of Matilda Samson (married after June 1865) & Samantha Catherine “Kate” Belding Samson (married January 6, 1880 in Mexico Township, Oswego County, New York) & Sarah Cornelia Hollis Stowell Samson (married November 7, 1903 at Orwell, New York.)
      Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, September 23, 1909 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Orwell - After an illness of several months’ duration Lewis C. Samson passed away Monday forenoon, September 20. His wife survives him, also one brother, Julian Samson of Texas, one sister, Mrs. Chester Gorton of Tidioute, Pennsylvania, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Samson was a member of the Congregational church, S. M. Olmstead post, Orwell Grange No. 66, and Welcome Lodge No. 680, I.O.O.F. His funeral services, conducted in Union church Wednesday afternoon by his pastor, Rev. T. T. Davies, assisted by Rev. A. A. Hand, were attended by the Odd Fellows, Post and Women’s Relief Corps in a body, besides many relatives and friends of the deceased. The floral tributes were beautiful and profuse. Relatives were present from Albion, Altmar, Lacona, Sandy Creek, Richland and Pulaski. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery, where the ritualistic burial service of the I.O.O.F. were conducted.
