Willis, 77, one of the best known residents of the eastern end of Oswego county, as widely known for his many acts of kindness, as he was for the success which met his efforts on the family homestead during the period of his activity, died at 11:50 o'clock Thursday night, November 22nd, at his home in the village of Fernwood. He had been ill but three days and news of his death was received with sincere regret by a wide circle of friends. He was a son of the late Lodwick and Mary Hess Willis, pioneers of whom the Willis District takes its name. On January 4, 1871, he married Miss Emma Gates, and until 10 years ago when he retired, with his family, occupied the homestead, Apple Grove Lawn, one of the show places of this section of the county. Mr. Willis specialized in fruit growing, and the orchards on the homestead were widely known for the quality of fruit produced, the farm consisting of more than 200 acres, most of which Mr. Willis kept under production. He was active in the First Methodist Episcopal church of Fernwood from childhood, served for many years as superintendent of the Sunday School, was a trustee and for many years was affiliated with every activity of the church and congregation. In 1875 he became a member of Pulaski lodge, 415, F.&A.M., and recently was honored by being made a life member of the lodge. He had been active for many years in Fernwood Grange. For the past 10 years Mr. and Mrs. Willis had resided in Fernwood. He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. Ida Fearnall of Fresno, California, and a grandson, Frank Wiley of Miles City, Montana, and several nephews and nieces. Friends and relatives attending the funeral from out of town were D. B. Wood, and Mrs. Ernest Whitney and daughter of Pulaski; Mr. and Mrs. George Wood and daughter of New York; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wood and Dr. R. S. Gates of Brownville; Dr. and Mrs. Earle G. Eaton of Baldwinsville and Mrs. Laura Barnard, at present passing some time in Theresa. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family home, the Rev. G. A. Leitka, pastor of the Baptist church officiating, and burial was made in the family plot in Willis cemetery.
