      Sgt. John M. Clemons, 27, formerly of Pulaski and a native of Watertown, died Tuesday at the U.S. Marine Corps base at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

      A spokesman at Camp Pendleton said the death was a suicide by hanging at the base naval hospital.

      The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home. Burial will be in Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery.

      Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

      Surviving are his mother, Sue Monson, Redfield; his father and stepmother, Dean and Barbara Clemons, Orwell; a brother, Mark D., Watertown; his maternal grandmother, Mary Monson, Tennessee; his paternal grandmother, Nerine Clemons, Orwell; his maternal stepgrandparents, Edith and Harold Ruby, Plymouth, England; his companion, Sgt. Kathy Barwick, Camp Pendleton, and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

      Born March 26, 1969, in Watertown, he resided most of his life in Pulaski and was a 1987 graduate of Pulaski High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after in October 1987. A fire-support man assigned to the 1st Marine Division, he had been stationed at Camp Pendleton since 1993.

      John M. Clemons, 27, of Pulaski died Tuesday at the U.S. Marine Corps base at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

      A native of Watertown, Mr. Clemons resided most of his life in Pulaski. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after his 1987 graduation from Pulaski High School. During his nine-year Marine career, Mr. Clemons rose to the rank of sergeant.

      Mr. Clemons received several commendations while in the service, including the Navy Achievement Award, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Kuwait Liberation Award, Southwest Asia Service Award, Combat Action Award, three Sea Service Deployment Awards and four Rifle Expert Badge Awards.

      Surviving are his father and stepmother, Dean and Barbara Clemons of Orwell; his mother, Sue Monson of Redfield; a brother, Mark D. of Watertown; his maternal grandmother, Mary Monson of Tennessee; his step maternal grandparents, Edith and Harold Ruby of Plymouth, England; his paternal grandmother, Nerine Clemons of Orwell; his companion, Sgt. Kathy Barwick of Camp Pendelton; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
