Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, November 23, 1905 The Syracuse Journal - Syracuse, New York - Child Swallows Strychnine - Little Gladys Colvin Takes Tablets From Grandma's Trunk - Her Death Follows - Pulaski, November 23 - Gladys Colvin, the 3- year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Colvin, of Port street, died last evening as the result of eating strychnine tablets. Mrs. Levi Colvin, grandmother of the child, had been arranging to visit Liverpool to-day, and during yesterday forenoon was packing a trunk, and in which she placed a box of strychnine tablets, which her prescribed for heart trouble from which she is subject. While the family was at dinner little Gladys was playing about the room where the trunk was being packed, and finding the tablets swallowed a number of them, thinking they were candy. When the child's grandmother entered the room to complete the packing of the trunk the little one was there still at play, and at about 1 o'clock was suddenly taken ill and became rigid. It was then learned that she had been eating the tablets, and Dr. James L. More and Dr. Fenton E. MacCallum were summoned by telephone, and responded immediately. Antidotes were administered, and the child, after a time, began to improve, the two physicians remaining some time. Just before 5 o'clock last evening the little one was taken worse, and died a few moments after, before a physician could reach the house. The child, it is thought, took fully half a grain of the poison, sufficient to kill an adult.
