    Melville McLear, 87 Dies In Noble Hospital

    Hammond -- Funeral services were held Monday morning in St. John the Evangelist church, Morristown, for Melville L. McLear, 87, who died last Friday at the Edward J. Noble hospital, Alexandria Bay. Burial was in Black Lake Cedars cemetery, Morristown.

    Mr. McLear is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Robert (Veta) Lee and Mrs. Ralph (Iva) Lavarnway, both of Hammond; Mrs. Richard (Avis) Newton, Ogdensburg; Mrs. Gardner (Erva) Dike, Lathrop, Calif; Mrs. Spencer (Beatrice) Walf, Lake Forest, Ill.; two sons, Avery and Vincent, both at home; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, George, Hammond, and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Young, Syracuse. The eldest son, Victor, died May 15, 1959.

    Born 10/5/1876 in Morristown a son of James and Hannah Hunter McLear. Spent early life around morristown then married Jennie Nelson, Hammond May 17, 1897. Moved to Hammond where they bought the Castle Farm. Mrs. McLear died 4.9.1934. In October 1936 he married Mrs. Angeline Martin, Canton. She died November 1954. Besides operating the farm, Mr. McLear was believed to be the first person in the north country to own an ice cutting machine. He was also a fur dealer and had a cottage colony on Black Lake for tourists.

    Death of James McLear
    Former Well Known Resident of Hammond Passed Away at Sandy Creek Thursday Last
    James McLear, a native of the town of Morristown, but who for years leaved in Hammond, died Thursday morning at his home at Sandy Creek after a long period of failing health caused from a complication of diseases, aged about 70 years. Mr. McLear was born near Brier Hill, a son of the late Hugh and Margaret McLear, pioneers of that section. For years the subject of this sketch followed the occupation of drilling and he was well-known throughout a wide section of Southern St. Lawrence county. He was a man of powerful build and in his prime he attained the great weight of 300 pounds and was still active and a hard worker. He was a veteran of the Civil War and in politics he was an ardent Republican, his father and brothers all being Democrats. Several years ago he left Hammond and located at Mexico, Oswego County, and later he wetn to Sandy Creek. Over 40 years ago he was married to Miss Hannah Hunter of Rossie, who survives him, also seven sons and four daughters, and one sister, Mrs. Colonel Moyer of Fowler. His brother George McLear died in the village several years ago and another brother, Francis McLear died in Rossie village about two years ago.

    The funeral services were conducted from St. Patrick's Church at Rossie at 10 a.m. by Rev. Father Crowley and interment was made in St. Patrick's Cemetery near that village.

    Death record on file in the Town of Morristown, NY. She and first husband lived in Miller, South Dakota. Following his death she returned to New York State, where she later married Bryant Shove. They adopted Frances Moore (married Leo Lortie of Sandy Creek, had Roger and Keitha) and Edgar Shove and raised them (Bryant's Neice & Nephew?) Lived in South Dakota for nine years, returning in 1890.

    On January 31, 1909 Abraham had all of his family assembled at the house to mark son Edward's return for a visit from South Dakota. According to son Lester's Dairy they celebrated Edward, Ella and Jennie's birthday, then on February 3rd they all met in Pulaski to have two family photos taken at Huested Studios. These are probably the famed two group shots of Abraham with each of his families.

    Abraham married Ophelia L. Castor about 1858. Ophelia (daughter of Chauncey Castor and Martha Amanda Clemons) was born on 22 Apr 1840 in Greenboro, Redfield Twp., Oswego County, New York; died in 1868 in Greenboro, Redfield Twp., Oswego County, New York; was buried in 1868 in Greenboro Cem., Redfield Township, Oswego County, New York.
