    Notes:

    Phyllis McNitt, 81 a longtime resident of Lacona, passed away Sunday evening November 26, 2017 at Morningstar Care Center in Oswego.

    Phyllis was born June 27, 1936 in Lowville the youngest of thirteen siblings, to Albert and Harriet (Burer) Burr. She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1954. Phyllis married Rex McNitt in June of 1964, he died in 2002. She was a tax preparer for many years and also had worked at Lincoln Bank. She served on the BOCES board for many years and was a member of the Helping Hands Club.

    Surviving are her children Doug (Linda), Dale (Shirley), Dean and his companion Kim Buck, 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and many nieces, nephews and friends.

    The Funeral Service will be Friday December 1st at 11 am at Summerville Funeral Home. Calling Hours will be Thursday November 30th from 5-8pm. Donations may be made in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org

    Harriet Marie Burr, 93, a native of Orwell, died Wednesday at the Lewis County Extended Care Facility, where she had been a patient four years.

    The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Virkler Percoski-Miller Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bradford Hunt, pastor of the Lowville United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Lyons Falls.

    Calling hours will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

    Surviving are three sons, Alfred, Cato, Robert, Mexico, N.Y., and Albert Jr., Canandaigua; three daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Violet) Monks, Lyons Falls, Mrs. James (Betty) Stott, Albany, and Mrs. Rex (Phyllis) McNitt, Lacona; 35 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and 27 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold Wyman, Bradenton, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

    A daughter, Ella A. Tuttle, Lowville, died June 15. Three sons, Franklin, George and James, also died previously.

    Born in Orwell on April 16, 1896, a daughter of Morris and Lula Wyman, she married Earl F.Larkin June 18, 1913, in Adams Center. The marriage ended in divorce. She later married Albert W. Burr Aug. 14, 1926, at Lyons Falls, with the Rev. William Eaton officiating.

    The couple moved to Pulaski in 1943 where they operated a farm until their retirement. Mrs. Burr was employed as a cook several years ago and was also a well-known wallpaper hanger in the Pulaski area.

    Mr. and Mrs. Burr returned to Lyons Falls to live in June 1984. Mr. Burr, a native of Port Leyden, died July 8, 1985. He was 87.

    Mrs. Burr had been an avid bowler. She was also a former member of the Fernwood Methodist Church, Fernwood, where she was active in the women's society group.

    Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 12, 1896 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Orwell - Mr. J. B. Wyman an aged farmer living about two miles east of this village died this morning of blood poisoning. Mr. Wyman was a well-known business farmer carrying a large dairy and making fancy butter. He has lived for many years on the farm where he died and had done much to advance progressive farming. He leaves a wife and one son, Morris J., to mourn his loss. The family have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.

    Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, October 24, 1906 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Orwell - Edward Near, a well-known and prosperous farmer died, Thursday afternoon, October 18, aged seventy-four years. He had not been well for a few days, but feeling somewhat better, he hitched up his horse and started to drive to his orchard. He had gone but a short distance when he fell from the wagon, striking his head on a stone. When Mrs. Near and the neighbors reached him he was found unconscious and never rallied. Coroner Hollis, of Lacona, and Dr. J. R. Allen were called and after an examination, decided an inquest unnecessary declaring death due to heart failure and concussion of the brain. Mr. Near was a member of S. M. Olmstead Post No. 387, Welcome Lodge No. 680, I.O.O.F. and of Orwell Grange No. 66. He is survived by a wife and two daughters, Mrs. Ella Stowell, of Orwell, and Mrs. Charles Upton, of Sandy Creek. The funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at his late home by the Rev. M. H. Dowd, pastor of the M. E. church, and were attended by a large number of friends and relatives from Orwell, Ricard, Altmar, Syracuse, Sandy Creek and Richland. Selections were rendered by a quartet. The members of W.R.C., G.A.R. and Odd Fellows lodges of Richland, Pulaski and Orwell attended the funeral in a body. Burial was made in Evergreen cemetery, where the ritualistic Arial services were conducted by Welcome Lodge, I.O.O.F.

    1895 Landmarks of Oswego - Near, Edward W. - His grandfather was an early settler of Montgomery county; he had a family of three children, two sons and one daughter, Betsey, Jacob and John, the latter the father of Edward W., who married Betsey Thompson and moved to Oneida county, where were born to them twelve children. Edward W., the tenth child, was born September 2, 1835. He lived in the western part of Oneida county until he was fifteen, when he came to Sandy Creek, Oswego county, where he learned the blacksmith’s trade. In 1858 he married Harriet A. Near, daughter of John Near of the town of Franklin, Butler county, Pa. Harriet was born January 29, 1836, and lived in Franklin until she was fourteen. She then came to Sandy Creek where she lived until 1858, when she married Edward W. They came to Orwell in 1860, where he ran a shop until 1864. During this time he entered the service in the Black Horse Cavalry, returning in 1862. In 1864 he bought a farm of 210 acres, where he now lives. Of their family of six children, three are living: Ella A., born June 2, 1859, married Frank P. Marsh, March 2, 1870, who died February 6, 1888; there was one child by this marriage, Lula B. Ella married second George E. Stowell, and they have one son, Edgar Lee. Clarence A., born March 5, 1861, died October 9, 1869. Johnny C., born November 5, 1866, died August 4, 1869. Lula B., born December 14, 1870, married Maurice J. Wyman November 16, 1887; there were three children by this marriage, Mabel O., Maurice Earl, Dayton H. Etta E., born July 5, 1873, married Charles B. Upton June 6, 1894. Charlie B., born April 11, 1875, died October 7, 1877. Mr. Near has served as justice of the peace. His family belong to the M. E. Church.

    Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, July 31, 1913 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Orwell - Mrs. Harriet Near died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles B. Upton, Tuesday morning, July 29. The funeral was held in Union church Thursday afternoon at half past one o'clock and burial made in Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Near is survived by one sister, Mrs. Henriette Carpenter of Sandy Creek, two daughters, Mrs. Ella Stowell and Mrs. Etta Upton, and several grandchildren.
