      Herman Irving Thurston

      Herman Irving Thurston, 80, of Suffield, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, in a local nursing home, after a long illness.
      Mr. Thurston was born in Stockgridge, N.Y. and lived in Suffield for more than 40 years. He graduated from the Class of 1947 at Northeastern University in Boston and worked for the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Company before retiring from M. Swift & Co. in 1981 as chief chemist. Mr. Thurston was an avid photographer and naturalist. He received many honors as a photographer. He had been a member of the Pine Meadow and Springfield Camera clubs, submitting his work for shows worldwide. Mr. Thurston was a deacon of the First Church of Christ, Congregational of Suffield for six years, and assistant superintendent of the church school for several years. Mr. Thurston enjoyed his volunteer work for the Connecticut Department of Tourism, assisting with the Bradley International Airport Welcome Center. Surviving are his wife, Mary Gilbert Thurston; four brothers, Merton and Harold Thurston of Munnsville, N.Y. Clinton Thurston of Canastota, N.Y. and Gene Thurston of Olean, N.Y. and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

      Herman Thurston, 80; Suffield Resident

      Herman Irving Thurston of Suffield, an avid photographer and naturalist, died Friday in a local nursing home after a long illness. He was 80.

      Mr. Thurston was born in Stockbridge, N.Y., and lived in Suffield for more than 40 years. He graduated in the Class of 1947 at Northeastern University in Boston and worked for the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co. before retiring from M. Swift & Co. in 1981 as chief chemist.

      Mr. Thurston received many honors as a photographer. He had been a member of the Pine Meadow and Springfield camera clubs, submitting his work for shows nationwide.

      He also was a deacon for the First Church of Christ, Congregational, of Suffield for six years, and assistant superintendent of the church school for several years.

      He found great pleasure in his volunteer work for the Connecticut Department of Tourism, assisting with the Bradley International Airport Welcome Center.

      Mr. Thurston is survived by his wife, Mary Gilbert Thurston; his brothers, Merton and Harold Thurston of Munnsville, N.Y., Clinton Thurston of Canastota, N.Y., and Gene Thurston of Allegheny, N.Y.; his nephew, Dennis Thurston, of Windsor; and many other nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand- nephews.

      A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at First Church of Christ, Congregational, at 81 High St. in Suffield. Donations may be made to the church's memorial fund.
