    • Walter was in the 80th Infantry, Co. I European Theater from 1943-45. He was wounded in Germany. Once home, Walt worked for Drop Forge in Clayville and Whitestown. In 1976 he and Freda moved to Raquette Lake, NY where hel resided summers, wintering in Florida. The Nars cottage was a frequent stopping place for locals and visitors. Warren family cousin Mavis Fox Stanton once summered nearby. From the News-Journal: "Walter Czarniawski, born May 14, 1923 in Herkimer, New York, passed away October 17, 2011 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida leaving broken hearts from Florida to New York. Walt, known to many of his friends as Nars, lived much of his life married with his beloved wife, Freda (deceased), at their permanent residence in Raquette Lake, NY. Son of Anna and Nars Czarniawski, Walt served in the Army on the front lines with the 318th infantry Regiment (The Blue Ridge Division) in World War II from 1943 to 1946. He was awarded a purple heart and a bronze star for his service and sacrifice. He loved to fish and hunt in the Adirondacks where he was a proud member of the Adirondack Conservation Council. Walt spent his winters fishing and combing the beaches in New Smyrna Beach, where he eventually moved full-time. He loved spending time with his family and friends. And he adored his dogs. Walt leaves behind two nephews, Shawn and Chad O'Neil and their wives and children; a cousin, Carol Wagner; and "the girls" whom he thought of as his daughters, Nora and Monica Burke. A memorial service will be held in New Smyrna Beach at Settle-Wilder Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 25, at 4:00 p.m. Walt will be laid to rest in New York. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to Raquette Lake Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 160, Raquette Lake, NY 13436. Condolences may be made online at www.settlewilder funeralhome.com"
