    • Dewitt Carpenter - June 4, 1848 - April 11, 1908. Military Service: Veteran of the Civil War; Enlisted February 23, 1865 at Orwell, New York, for a term of three years; Mustered in March 1, 1865 as a Private in Company G, 24th New York Cavalry Volunteers; Discharged August 5, 1865 with the rank of Private. Son of Artemus and Nancy Keller Carpenter. Husband of Abby A. Stevens Carpenter.
      Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, April 15, 1908 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Dewitt Carpenter, who died April 11, 1908, was born in the Town of German Flats, Herkimer County, New York June 4, 1848 and came to Orwell in the winter of 1849 with his parents who settled in the eastern part of the town. His boyhood days were spent helping his father in clearing land, he attended the District school very little, when he could be spared from work. February 23, 1865 he enlisted in Company G, 24th Regiment New York Volunteer Cavalry and served until the close of the war. On September 12, 1867 he married Abbey A. Stevens who survives him, also four daughters and two sons. Mr. Carpenter was a Republican in politics and was prominently connected in all matters of interest to his town and always ready to help any good cause and to oppose anything not good for the community. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1882 which office he held until 1889 when he was elected Supervisor which office he held for five years when he was again elected Justice, which office he held at the time of death. He was a member of the G.A.R. Post S. M. Olmstead, No. 387, and always took a great interest in it and was chosen commander for a number of years, was also a member of F. & A.M. Lodge, No. 415, of Pulaski, New York.
