    • Newspaper Obituary - May 23, 1929 Sandy Creek News - Popular Victory Store Manager Succumbs After Operation For Goiter - The passing of William H. Jones grieves the community which he has served well and faithfully, the excellence of that service being outstanding. Mr. Jones had been in ill health for some time, but continued at his work as manager of the local store of the Victory Chain, until about three weeks ago, when he suffered a severe attack. He was removed to the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown where he gradually improved. A goiter operation was believed necessary if there was to be any recovery. A successful operation was performed on Mondy, but his heart, which had become weakened, failed to stand the strain and he died at noon on Tuesday, May 21, 1929. As a manager and clerk, his equal for service has not been found. An interested bystander noting, Mr. Jones' quick movements in waiting on customers, timed him and reported that thirty customers received excellent service and their wants were satisfactorily filled in twenty minutes. Mr. Mowry, president of the Victory Chain, stated that Mr. Jones was the most efficient clerk in the chain of 103 stores. On examining the reports from the local store, it was discovered that he had done an average five years business in two years, and in recognition of this achievement, the firm had notified him that on his return to the store he would have a substantial increase in salary. William H. Jones was born in Brooklyn, March 6, 1883, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Jones. His boyhood days were spent in Farmingdale, L.I. and in Brooklyn, where he was united in marriage with Annie Bingenheimer in Brooklyn. About four years later they came to Sandy Creek with their son, William H. Jones Jr., and made their home in the house now owned by Mrs. Nellie Scott. They returned to Long Island for a period of two years, coming back to Sandy Creek where they have since remained, residing for a time in what is now the office of Dr. J. R. Allen, and then moving to the present home on Hadley street. About two years ago, Mr. Jones joined the Sandy Creek Lodge F. & A. M. He attended the Baptist church and ushered there for many years. He was an active member of the Sandy Creek Fire Department, which will attend the funeral in a body. The funeral will be held from the home of Mr. Jones' brother, J.P. Jones, because of the ill health of Mrs. William H. Jones. Rev. Floyd Fennen will officiate, assisted by Rev. W. O. Thomas. Burial will be in the Woodlawn cemetery. Surviving besides the widow are four sons, William H. Jones Jr., Milton King, Clifford Stanley, and Wilbur Newell Jones; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth King; a brother, John P. Jones, and two sisters, Mrs. Andrew W. Silkworth and Mrs. Edward P. Palmer, of Lindenhurst, L.I. A sister, Carrie, died at the age of nine years and another sister, Mrs. William Sayre, passed away eleven years ago. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
