- March 5, 1893 Howard Hilton, age 4 years, 3 months, born in Richland Township, Son of George and Maude Hilton, died in Richland Township of diphtheria.
Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, March 16, 1893 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Richland - Richland is under a cloud to-day, although the sun is shining bright. Only a few days ago George Hilton was living in his new house that he had worked so hard to build. His family, consisting of a wife and three very bright children were in good health, and his prospects looked as bright as almost any ones. But one cold night his house and its contents were laid in ashes. Then that dread disease, diphtheria entered his family. Last Saturday night his youngest child, a beautiful babe of six months, breathed its last and was buried immediately in the Richland cemetery. This Monday morning the oldest child, a boy of about five years, died and is probably buried before now. The little girl has the disease but there are some hopes that she will recover. Still they have a good many fears. The people are taking great precaution to prevent any spreading of the disease, and it is sincerely hoped no new cases will develop. Dr. Box is doing his best, but there are things beyond even his great skill.
