Newspaper Obituary - Saturday, July 14, 1962 Palladium Times - Milray Speedway Starter - Official Fatally Injured By Car At Start Of Fulton Race - Fulton - A 51 year old Brewerton man, official starter at the Milray Speedway, was fatally injured Friday night when he was struck by a stock car at the start of the feature race at the track. The tragedy was witnessed by approximately 3,000 spectators, including the victim's wife. Pronounced dead on arrival at Lee Memorial hospital was Lester Seeley, 51, of Wickham Drive, Brewerton. Seeley was rused to the hospital by Menter ambulance after the accident but was pronounced dead by Dr. Thomas Lamberti. According to Oswego County Deputy Sheriff James McDermott and Oswego County Sheriff Merwin Upcraft, who investigated the accident. Seeley was struck by a car driven by Joel Magari of East Syracuse just after he had given the go signal for the race. Megari, driving car No. 1, and a car, No. 28, operated by Ronnie Wallace of Oswego, bumped slightly and the two vehicled locked wheels, McDermott said. The two cars, Magari in the inside and Wallace in the outside lane, traveled "quite a distance" with the two vehicles locked before Magari's car broke loose and was thrown toward Seeley. Seeley was backing off the track toward the infield of the oval when he was struck and catapulted through the air by the impact. Seeley, a veteran starter, had been struck once before while performing his duties at the Weedsport Racing Track in August 1954. The fatality was the first in the two year history of the Milray Speedway, which is located on Route 57, a short distance south of Fulton. Magari was taken to Syracuse Memorial hospital where he was admitted and treated for shock following the incident. After Seeley had been taken to the hospital, the feature race was restarted and run as scheduled. The victim's wife, Mrs. Stella Seeley, 50, of Brewerton, was an eyewitness to the tragedy which occurred in front of the grandstand. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Thelma Kimler, 29 of Brewerton. The body was released to the Traub funeral home in Central Square where funeral arrangements are incomplete.
