      Don't know if this will help or hurt...I have no record of Patience Barber, but here is what I do have...most is from the Descendants of James Cole of Plymouth, 1632; I have also looked at Census records when available and have verified most of the information through other sources as noted, however, there may be errors or omissions which are not intentional:

      1. HUGH2 COLE (JAMES1) was born June 29, 1628 in Barnstaple, Devon, England, and died January 22, 1698/99 in Swansea, MA (now Warren, RI). He married (1) MARY FOXWELL January 08, 1654/55 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, daughter of RICHARD FOXWELL. He married (2) ELIZABETH LETTUCE January 01, 1688/89 in Swansea, MA (now Warren, RI). He married (3) MARY SHELLEY January 30, 1693/94 in Swansea, MA (now Warren, RI).

      Buried at Tyler Point Cemetery, Barrington, Rhode Island.

      He served during King Phillip's War. Was propounded for membership in the Swansea Baptist Church June 22, 1671. Cole's River in Swansea is named for Hugh, who was admitted as a freeman in 1670. He was a deputy from Swansea to the General Court of Plymouth Colony, 1673-75, 1680, 1683-87.

      He was (unknown value) - He was a mariner. The Will of John Cole of Swansey (dated September 11, 1742, probated July 4, 1748) lists wife Sarah Cole, daughters Susannah Round, Mary Luther, and Hannah Hammond, granddaughter Elizabeth Wheeler; land son John bought of Roger Kinnicut.

He married (1) MERCY WOOD July 19, 1764 in Swansea, MA (now Warren, RI), daughter of NOAH WOOD and ELIZABETH MASON. She died April 10, 1770. He married (2) SUSANNAH SALISBURY March 18, 1777. She was born 1746, and died February 13, 1823 in Warren TWP, Washington County, OH.

      Notes for JOHN COLE:
      He was (an unreadable value) Rev. War. Served during the Revolutionary War in Col. John Dagget's Regiment. Afterwards he removed to western Virginia and then came to the area of Marietta in 1803. In 1804 he was living below Vienna Island and operating a ferry between Belpre and Marietta. He opened the first public house in the area.

      John Cole, the father of Asa, settled in Warren TWP. in 1806, and kept the tavern at the roadside on the river bank known as the "Half Way House", because it was about equidistant from Marietta and Belpre. He entertained the wayfarer and the stranger and as was the universal custom in his time set forth the "gigger" of whiskey to his guests, until he passed away at the ripe age of ninety-five years, about 1817*. (*should read about 74 years in 1826)
