      Newspaper Obituary - Tuesday, January 28, 2003 Watertown Daily Times - Watertown, New York - Paul G. Benoit, 84, Honeoye Falls, died Sunday at Highland Hospital, Rochester, after a short illness. Mr. Benoit lived in Watertown and Adams Center for many years. From 1950 to 1955, he owned and operated Benoit Electric Co. Inc., Adams Center, where he sold televisions and major appliances manufactured by General Electric, operated a gift shop and did electrical contracting work, appliance service and TV repair. In 1955, he accepted a position as an electrical engineer with the Heavy Military Electronics and Defense Systems Department at Gen eral Electric Co., Syracuse, and he and his family moved to Phoenix. He worked for GE on a number of government contracts, including projects related to the Atlas guidance system and other aspects of the space program. In 1974, he was appointed manager of field programs for GE. Following his retirement from GE in 1980, he and his wife moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, returning to the Northeast in 2000. Most recently they lived at Pinehurst in Honeoye Falls. Mr. Benoit was a member of Callimachus Lodge 369 in the Masonic Order for more than 40 years, serving as master for a time. He was also a member of the Grand Chapter of the New York State Order of the Eastern Star. He was elected to the Elfin Society of General Electric and served as a member of the board of education of the Phoenix School System, including eight years as president. Born October 7, 1918, in Watertown, son of Harold W. and Evelyn Grosvenor Benoit, he graduated from Watertown High School in 1937. He was valedictorian of the class of 1940 at Clarkson College of Technology, Potsdam, receiving a degree in electrical engineering. While at Clarkson, he was president of the Student Board of Governors and editor in chief of the Clarksonian, the college's yearbook. He was elected to the engineering honorary society Tau Beta Pi and to the leadership society Phalanx. Following his graduation, he worked briefly as an engineer with GE, Schenectady. He was called to active duty as an officer in Army Corps of Engineers, serving from in 1940 to 1945. In the military he was assistant professor of military science in the Reserve Officers Training Corps at Clarkson, supervised training for Air Force and engineering personnel in various assignments and was the executive officer of an aviation engineer battalion in Spokane, Washington. He rose to the rank of major in the Army Reserves following World War II. He married Doris L. Pond on July 26, 1941, at the Adams Center Baptist Church with the Rev. Ivan M. Cash officiating. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Philip, Bridport, Vermont., and Douglas, Phoenix; two daughters, Judith Cole, Shelburne, Vermont, and Sue Miller, Pittsford; two brothers, Donald, Rome, and Richard, Orlando Florida; a sister, Ruth Benoit, Ore City, Texas, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Pittsford. Spring burial will be in South Richland Cemetery, Fernwood. Arrangements are with Merton H. Kays Funeral Home, Honeoye Falls.
