    • Melvin J. Walti, age 66 of Dexter passed away Saturday morning at Hospice at Ellis Farm, Watertown.

      He was born May 19, 1951 to Robert and Pauline Walti of LaFargeville. Melvin graduated from Clayton High School in 1969.

      He worked on the family farm until 1973 when he went to work for the New York Air Brake for 40 years before retiring in 2013. He moved to Dexter in 1980. He belonged to the LaFargeville and Dexter Fire Departments.

      He was a member of many organizations. He was secretary and financial officer of the General Brown Softball League, member of the Lil Angels Snowmobile Club, New York Snowmobile Association. He was a high school baseball official for over 30 years. He was adjutant and financial officer of the Smith Savage Squadron 583 of Dexter for 30 years.

      Melvin was predeceased by his parents and companion of 38 years Cathy Knight.

      He is survived by his stepchildren Faith (George) Youngs, Dennis (Colleen) Ellingsworth, John (Lori) Ellingsworth and Robert Knight. His brother and sister-in-law Duke and Sally Snider, his aunts Sharon Connell and Carol Walti, his uncles Gene VanAlstyne and Gene Walti and cousins.

      The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, calls and visits.

      Funeral services will be Tuesday November 7th at 11:00 am at the Johnson Funeral Home ,Dexter with Rev. Sally Buyea of the Dexter United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday from 4-7 PM. Donations may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County 1398 Gotham St. Watertown, NY 13601.
