  • Notes
    • Leah Kearney Balcom, 56, of 111 North St., died from complications of cancer Saturday at her home, where she was under the care of Oswego County Hospice.

Mrs. Balcom moved to DeKalb Junction in 1962 and to Pulaski in 1973. She was a business teacher at Hermon-DeKalb Central School, Pulaski Academy and Central School, and Sandy Creek Central School, retiring in 1996 after 32 years of teaching.

She was a member of National and Eastern Business Education associations and Oswego County Retired Teachers Association. A member of Park United Methodist Church, she sang in the choir and formerly was church secretary and administrative council chairwoman.

Through Park United Methodist Church, she organized and established a clown ministry program that later involved several other clowns. As Jingle the Clown or JoBo the Hobo, she provided numerous skits for Sunday services during the "Children's Moment." She and the other clowns also performed at nursing homes, hospitals, and various public events.

After retiring from teaching, she compiled the skits that she and the other clowns had written for a book, "Christian Clown Skits," which is used in numerous churches in several states.

Born Sept. 1, 1942, at Mars Hill, a daughter of Kenneth and Frances Saunders Kearney, she graduated from Aroostook Central Institute, Mars Hill, in 1960. She received a bachelor's degree in business from Husson College, Bangor, Maine, in 1964, and a master's degree in business education from Syracuse University in 1970. She married Pratt Balcom on July 24, 1976, at the Bridgewater Free Baptist Church, Bridgewater, Maine.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, Andrew, Pulaski; a sister, Rena Kearney, Mars Hill; a brother, Kenneth Kearney, Hernden, Va., and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Park United Methodist Church with the Rev. Elizabeth Mowry, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in South Richland Cemetery, Fernwood.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home.
