      William J. “Bill” Roche

      June 25, 2013

William J. “Bill” Roche, 92, of Syracuse passed away Tuesday, June 25 at the VA Medical Center. Bill was born July 23, 1920; the second son of the late Michael L. and Sarah (O’Toole) Roche. Bill graduated from Pulaski Academy and Central School and served in the Army Air Corps in Italy during WWII. Upon his return from the war, he graduated from Niagara University and Albany College of Pharmacy. Bill met Betty Byrne one summer in Pulaski while working as a pharmacist. They married in 1952, and resided in Syracuse where Bill owned and operated Roche Pharmacy on S. Geddes St. for more than 10 years. He later worked at Leo Branch Pharmacy in the Yates Hotel, and retired at age 73 after working for many years at Rite Aid Pharmacy. Bill and Betty were active members of the Bellevue Country Club where they enjoyed golf and bowling. Bill loved spending summers at the family camp at Pine Grove on Lake Ontario with his seven children and large extended family. Bill was a quiet and dignified man, the quintessential gentleman who never missed an opportunity to dance to his favorite song “Mack the Knife.” He was always and forever a fan of the NY Yankees, who loved his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren. Throughout his life, Bill’s faith never wavered, and helped him overcome the challenges that he faced.

Bill was predeceased by his wife, Betty; his brothers, Ed and Jack; and his sons, Bill and Matt. He is survived by daughters, Betsy of Sarasota FL; Maureen Ganley (Bill) of Baldwinsville; Sarah Roche of Syracuse; Bridget Servatius (Michael) of Walpole, MA and his son, Mark (Fran Donovan) of Carlsbad, CA. Also surviving are daughter-in-law, Lou Ann of Patchogue LI; grandchildren Chris and Kate Roche, Taylor Fisher, Erin Ganley; and many nieces and nephews from both the Roche and Byrne families.

Services to honor Bill will be held Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at his church, Most Holy Rosary on Roberts Avenue. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, June 29 at 10 a.m. at Rosary Church and burial will follow immediately at St Mary’s Cemetery in Dewitt.

Memorial contributions may be made to Most Holy Rosary Church, 111 Roberts Ave, Syracuse, NY.
