NEW LONDON - Mary (Ames) Murray, 87, of Fenwood Commons, died Dec. 1, 2009, at The Clough Center in New London from lung cancer.

She was born in Richland, N.Y., on Feb. 17, 1922, the daughter of Earl and Grace (Fox) Ames. She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1940 and then attended business school in Syracuse, N.Y., before working for Crouse-Hines and then Surface Combustion Corp., where she met her husband, Bill, in early 1942 and married him later that year at the age of 20. They were married for 58 years.

She lived a mobile life in Syracuse, Philadelphia, Toledo, Ohio, Basking Ridge, N.J., and New City, Colonie and Indian Lake, N.Y., where she lived for 30 years. In 2004 she moved to New London, where she made many good friends for which she was very grateful.

In her younger years, she enjoyed horseback riding and skiing. Later, she became an avid golfer, playing several days a week until the age of 85 when she became ill. Those who knew her recognized her intense passion for the game. She loved entertaining and parties with friends and family.

Her husband, William J. Murray II, died in 2001.

      .

IN HER LIFE: She was proud of her many years of volunteering. During World War II she volunteered for the American Red Cross in Syracuse. Later she was an active participant in PTAs, served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and chaired the annual church bazaar for the Nevil Memorial Church of St. George in Oakmont, Pa. She served as a hospital volunteer in Toledo, Ohio. Later she served as a volunteer dispatcher for the Indian Lake Volunteer Ambulance Corps, where her husband served as an EMT and ambulance driver. She also delivered Meals on Wheels with her husband.

Members of her family surviving include a son, William J. Murray III, and daughter-in-law, Judy Murray, of Marblehead, Mass.; a brother, Lawrence Fox Ames and his wife, Joan Ames, of Indian Lake, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her brother, Walter Ames, and sister, Juanita Hiltz.

      .
