    • He emigrated from Switzerland in 1881 (1900, 1920, 1930 censuses) and became a U.S. citizen in 1888 (1920 census). Married in Switzerland, his wife, Mary, and their four children followed him to the U.S. in 1883. They would have three more children together. The family first settled in Carthage, New York and then John and Mary spent their remaining years in Altmar, where John was a farmer.

      According to the 1920 census, John worked as a mail carrier, carrying mail from the trains to the post office, when he was around 70 years old. At the age of 75, after his first wife had died, he married Altmar widow Annie Fox, and outlived her after ten years of marriage. He spent the last two years of his life living with his daughter, Minnie, in Camden, New York, and died at the age of 87.

      There is a detailed obituary for him that appeared in the Daily Sentinel (Rome NY), Tuesday evening, May 11, 1937, page 8, Camden news, col. 1, bottom, but it is too illegible to be read online:

      "John Obrist Dies at Third Street Home"
      ...He was born in Switzerland March, 2-?, son of John and (Marie? Obrist)...years...Mary Wertl?...to the country in 18...Carthage, where...Mrs. Obrist died in 1922. Surviving besides the daughter at ...three daughters...Mrs. Earl Tanner, Albany...Syracuse, and Herman Obrist, Utica, a brother Robert Obrist, Switzerland. He ...(22?) grandchildren...(great) grandchildren.

      The remains of John Obrist, a life long resident of Altmar, were brought here from Camden Thursday [May 13, 1937] for burial. Mr. Obrist whose health has been poorly, spent the past two years at Camden with his daughter Minnie...

      Funeral Services Held
      For Late John Obrist

      Camden, May 15-Funeral services for John Obrist who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Christian Fauser, Third St., were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist Church at Altmar. The Rev. N.J. Polney, pastor, officiated. The following grandsons acted as bearers: Paul Fauser, Herman, Harry and Robert Obrist and Charles Fauser.

      Among the relatives and friends attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tanner, Miss Dorothy and Miss Irene Tanner, Albany; Mr. and Mrs. John Obrist, Miss Margaret Obrist, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sabrey, Mrs. Edward Quinn, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Obrist sr., Harry Obrist, Miss Elizabeth Obrist, Mrs. Murphy, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Obrist jr., Herman Obrist, Syracuse; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gossman, Natural Dam; Miss Anna Obrist, Norwich; Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Fauser, Mr. and Mrs. George Fauser, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Seubert, Charles and Paul Fauser, Miss Dorothy Connif, Camden; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Obrist, Mrs. A. Reddner, Utica.

      Interment was made in the family plot at Altmar Cemetery.
