    • Newspaper Article - Wednesday, October 24, 1900 Pulaski Democrat - Calkins - Tyler - A very pretty home wedding occurred at the residence of Mrs. Flora Tyler on the lake road near Selkirk last Wednesday afternoon, when her daughter, Ola L., was united in marriage to Mr. Florance Calkins of Yonkers. Promptly at four o'clock the bride and groom, preceded by the bridesmaids, Misses Lois Tyler and Blanche Calkins, entered the parlor and took their places beneath an arch of trailing pine, where, in the presence of about forty guests, the Rev. D. G. Christman, pastor of the Fernwood M. E. church, performed the ceremony. The bride was handsomely attired in a gown of white silk and canied a bouquet of bride's roses, while the bridesmaids wore gowns of pink and white and canied carnations of the same colors. Immediately following the ceremony a bountiful collation was served and congratulations were extended to the happy couple. The presents, which were numerous and elegant, betokened the high esteem in which the young people are held. The bride is the eldest daughter of Mrs. Tyler and a young woman wise sterling character and winning ways have gained for her a large circle of warm friends, while the groom is the son of F. Mason Calkins of Daysville and a young man of more than ordinary business ability. He now holds the responsible position of manager for Woolworth & Company's Yonkers store, a position which he has attained by close attention to duty and an application of sound business methods. Mr. and Mrs. Calkins left on the evening train for a short bridal tour, after which they will take up their residence in Yonkers.

    • Ola Laura Calkins - February 9, 1878 - February 14, 1915. Daughter of Thaddeus W. and Flora Ann Walworth Tyler. Wife of Florance A. Calkins. Married October 17, 1900. Section 3, Row 9.

Newspaper Obituary - February 17, 1915 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - As the evening benedictions were being said in the houses of God, Sunday evening, the benediction of peace was spoken to a brave little woman in our village at the home she so loved while surrounded by friends so dear to her, and the spirit of Mrs. Ola Calkins took it's flight to the realms of peace, leaving the tired worn body a sacrifice on the alter of human suffering. Pain ended, peace and rest attained. For two long years this brave woman has been battling with the strong persistent adversary to her body, always determined that she had to much to keep her here to give up the fight for life. Every known and conceivable help was tried to aid her in her determination to recover but to no avail. Her life had been despaired of several times and last fall she was in the hospital at Syracuse, seemingly at the close of the struggle but she recovered and came home and spent several happy weeks with her children and friends. Five weeks ago, Sunday, she was stricken down again and gradually faded away until the close of her life which came Sunday evening. Through her sickness she has demonstrated wonderful courage always hopeful and always declaring that she would recover and live to bestow the care and love of mother on her dear young daughters. Her friends are shadowed with grief and from the home she planned and loved she will be sadly missed. Ola Laura Calkins was born at Selkirk, four miles west of this village, February 9, 1878. She attended the school near her home and also became a student of Pulaski High School, graduating from the training class and then followed teaching for a short time. She was united in marriage with Florance A. Calkins, of this town, in October 1900. He was connected with the Woolworth business and was making great progress when, seven years ago, he was stricken and died in Rochester, leaving his young wife with two little daughters. She removed to this village and planned a home which she completed six years ago, on Lake Street, and in which she took great pride and had hope for many years of happy life with her children, but two years ago, this month, sickness came and all the medical skill and faithful nursing seemed to be only able to give her brief intervals of relief. Her sickness has been a community interest and her death is a community sorrow, and the hopes and prayers for her recovery have been bountiful, but God had other plans for his little one and while tears dim our eyes there must be consolation in the thought that "Not now but in the coming years we will understand." Mrs. Calkins was the daughter of Thaddeus Tyler and Flora Walworth. The father died about twenty years ago and the mother died last August. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. C. Arthur Shaw, of Syracuse, and two daughters, Ruth A. and Eveline L., ages twelve and ten who will be left to the loving care of their grandfather, Mason Calkins and aunt, Mrs. F. E. Alexander, who is a sister of their father. The funeral will be held today, from the home, at one o'clock, Rev. E. A. Rogers, pastor of the Baptist church, where Mrs. Calkins worshipped, officiating. Burial will be made in Daysville cemetery. Among the last things Mrs. Calkins wrote was the following lines found in her writing cabinet and for the beauty of the lines and the assurance they give of her thought of life we are permitted to give them in connection with this memorial. "Some ships sail East, and others West while the selfsame breezes blow; Tis the set of sail, and not the gale that bids them where to go; As the winds of the sea are the ways of men, as we slowly pass through life; Tis the set of the soul, decides the goal, and not the storms or strife."
