Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, August 19, 1971 The Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - Elroy "Sam" Harmes, 62, a resident of Hurlbut Road, Mexico RD 2, died Wednesday afternoon at Veterans Administration Hospital, Syracuse, after an illness of one day. Born October 27, 1908, at Brandon, Iowa, he was the son of Fred and Jennie Hurtt Harmes. He had retired from the Backus feed mill and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army, in the European and African theaters. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eliza Heiligenthaler Harmes; two daughters, Mrs. Edward (Shirley) Milovicz and Miss Linda Harmes, both of Mexico; a brother, Harold Harmes of Rochester; five sisters, Mrs. Ross Nichols and Mrs. James Hardy of Mexico, Mrs. Glen Carpenter of Pulaski, Mrs. Bernard Clohosey of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and Mrs. Lloyd Cornwell of West Monroe; four grandchildren, and a great-grandchild, nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Gibbs Funeral Home, the Rev. Bertram Cropp officiating. Burial will be in South Richland Cemetery with full military honors. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
