Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, May 30, 1928 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Grandson of First Settler Passes Away - George E. Jones Dies on Farm Taken up 126 Years Ago - With the death of George E. Jones of the Farmer District which occurred Sunday evening, May 27, the last of the old neighbors has gone. He was born October 24, 1847, in a frame house which stood very close to the site where E. L. Burr built in later years. When he was three years old the family moved to a new house which had been built a short distance away on the same farm and that was his home for the remainder of his eighty years. The farm was taken up from government land in 1802, by his grandfather, Israel Jones, who first built a log cabin. Later the frame house was built where George Jones was born, the youngest child of Erastus C. and Betsey Walworth Jones. A brother, Milo Jones and a sister, Mrs. E. L. Burr died some years ago. It was a source of great pride to Mr. Jones that the farm had been so long in the family and that he had lived so many years to enjoy it. In 1874 he was married to Miss Josephine Bohanon, who died fourteen years ago, and six children were born to them: Mrs. John Turnbull of Mapleview, Mrs. A. M. Jones and Milo Jones at home, Frank S. Jones of Camden, Alice Mabel, who died some years ago, and Mrs. James Chawgo of Pulaski. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Since the death of his wife, Mr. Jones has been cared for in the home of his son, Milo and daughter, Mrs. A. M. Jones. He was greatly affected by the illness and death of a near neighbor and lifelong friend, Hollister Jones and began to fail rapidly from that time, breathing his last just two weeks after the death of his friend. The funeral will be held from his old home on Wednesday, May 30, at 2 p.m., Rev. A. E. Lawrence officiating. Burial in the family plot in Pulaski cemetery.
