Brownell, 74, Succumbs to Shock - Frank Silas Brownell a lifelong resident of the Stillwater district, town of Orwell, died at his farm home about 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, February 14. He suffered a paralytic stroke just two weeks prior to his death, and from that stroke he never recovered. Mr. Brownell was born February 28, 1860 in the town of Orwell, a son of George W. and Martha Laning Brownell [sic], and spent his entire life in the neighborhood where he died, following the career of farming. He was a man of few words, but strong convictions; straightforward and honest in all his dealings, and it could be truly said of him that “his word was as good as his bond.” He possessed in good measure the qualities of character that make for good citizenship. He was a member of Orwell Grange, and for many years was a trustee of his school district. On November 13, 1895 he married Miss Carrie Reese who with two sons, George R. of Queens Village, Long Island, and Zachary of Orwell, and two grandchildren, Conley and Margaret Brownell, survive him. He is also survived by one brother, Norman Brownell of Ricard, and a sister, Mrs. Hattie Speck of Kasoag. The funeral was held at the home Saturday afternoon, Rev. Harold H. Barnard, pastor of the Orwell Union church, officiating. Bearers were Norman Brownell, Herbert Speck, Elmer Wilson, Addison Stearns and Lewis Nichols. The body was placed in the vault at Evergreen cemetery, Orwell, where burial will be made in the spring.
