Rev. Dr. Catherine Salisbury, age 99, resident of Pulaski passed away Tuesday, July 5, at Seneca Hill Manor in Volney. Catherine was born November 18, 1916 in Pulaski, the daughter of Guy and Eva Chase Frary. She graduated from Pulaski Academy as Salutatorian in 1933. She married Charles Salisbury in 1935. They lived on a dairy and poultry farm in Pulaski. He died December 9, 1978. She received Bachelor and Master Degrees in Education at SUNY Oswego and taught at Central Square and Sandy Creek Central Schools, retiring in 1979. She received a Master of Divinity degree (cum laude) from Drew Theological School in Madison, NJ in 1982 and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, NY in 2001.
She was ordained an elder in the United Methodist Church and served as a fulltime pastor at the Philadelphia and Evans Mills UM Churches and the Mannsville and Lorraine UM Churches. After mandatory retirement at age 70, she served two years as associate pastor at the Ellisburg, Henderson and Belleville UM Churches, four years at Park UM Church in Pulaski, and two years at Asbury UM Church in Watertown. During those same years, she served part-time as interim pastor at Antwerp and Spragueville UM Churches, at Carthage and Champion UM Churches, and at Sandy Creek and Orwell UM Churches. From 1998 until 2000 she served as pastor at Christ Church Parish, a charge made up of Dugway, Altmar and Fernwood UM Churches. She formerly served as a member of the Ontario District Board of Ordained Ministry, the District Council of Ministries, the District Board of Church Building and Location, and the Northern New York Conference Board of Trustees of the United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Dr. Salisbury was a 70-year member of the Pulaski Grange where she held several offices, and was also a member of the County, State and National Granges. She was a former Deputy State Master of the Junior Grange for Oswego County, and served for several years as a 4-H leader and a Sunday school teacher. She was a former president of the Pulaski Alumni Association, the Sandy Creek Central School Teachers Association, and the Pulaski Women’s Civic Club.
With her husband, and more recently with various seminary and church related groups, she traveled extensively in Africa, South America, Europe and the Middle East. She has been a frequent visitor in the homes of her children, wherever they might be living. She celebrated her 70th birthday in Ft. Worth, TX and her 80th and 90th in Pulaski with all of her six children and families present. She always enjoyed gardening, cross country skiing, and working with children. At various times she shared her home with a foster daughter, Christine Fisher, with a foreign exchange student Ben Ortellado of Paraguay, who passed away in July 2014, and with a colleague, Rev. Beatrice Clark who died in an auto accident in March 1992.
Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn Maurer of North Syracuse, Lois (Juan) Olaiz of Arizona, two sons, Donald (Maria Cecilia), of Texas, and David (Shelley) of Georgia, a daughter in-law, Barbara Salisbury of Pulaski, 12 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, four brothers, George, Robert, Harrison and Willard Frary, and three sons, Warren, Richard and Bruce.
Funeral Services will be held at noon, Monday, July 11, at the Park United Methodist Church, 2 Hubble Street, Pulaski, NY 13142 with burial at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, Monday, prior to the funeral. Arrangements by Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski.
