Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, August 1, 1929 The Journal and Republican - Lowville, New York - Two Pulaski Boys Drown In Pool, Man Is Rescued - Fred and Darwin Atkinson Lose Life and Harrison Wagenar Is Rescued ¬Waters of central New York claimed their 31st and 32nd victims and were cheated of a 64th Saturday afternoon by the arrival of Syracuse motorists at the swimming hole in the pasture of the McShane farm near Pulaski. Frederick Atkinson, 19, and his brother from the opposite bank and the pool and Harrison Wagenar, 35, a cousin of John Atkinson, father of the boys, was rescued when he was nearly drowned while trying to save the younger swimmers. Frederick was the first of the party to enter the pool and he swam across a distance of 25 feet. Darwin was next to enter and he had only proceeded about three feet from the bank when he sank from sight and did not again rise. Frederick saw the predicament of his brother from the opposite bank and swam to his rescue. He dove beneath the surface but not being a good swimmer and not being able to affect a rescue he tired himself and he, too, sank. Wagenar went to their aid, but both boys clutched at him and he was powerless to save them or to swim. While he was attempting the rescue, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cassidy of Ballentyne road, Syracuse, accompanied by Audrey Johnson and Herbert Ramsey, of Coral avenue, Syracuse, arrived at the pool. Other members of the party affected a rescue of Wagenar. Frederick William Atkinson was the eldest son and was born March 23, 1910. Darwin J. was the second son and was born May 1, 1912. Both were born in Pulaski. Surviving are the parents and six brothers and sisters.
