    • Newspaper Obituary - Friday, January 14, 1949 Post Standard - Syracuse, New York - Farmer, Hurled from Truck, Fatally Injured - Stewart Expires As Car Careens On Pompey Curve - Pitched From The Cab Of The Truck He Was Operating when it failed to negotiate a curve about two miles from his home on the Jamesville-Pompey rd. Ralph Stewart, 39, a farmer died before medical aid could reach him shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday. - Coroners Reports - Coroner Harry L. Gilmore reported that Stewart died of a broken neck and a crushed chest. Mrs. Iona Stewart, wife of the victim, who was following him in a passenger car and saw the truck careen off an embankment on the right side of the road, said that her husband recently had suffered attacks of appendicitis and that he also was afflicted with a heart ailment. She expressed the belief that he may have suffered an acute attack of appendicitis or a heart attack causing him to loosen his grip on the wheel of the truck. - Ambulance On Way - Trooper John Wilder of the DeWitt state police station substation arrived at the scene a short time after the accident. Deputy Sheriff John Bond at the courthouse jail said that a resident of the Jamesville-Pompey rd. telephoned a request for an ambulance and the Onondaga General hospital ambulance responded. Dr. Neal Paul of Jamesville also was summoned and pronounced the man dead before the ambulance arrived, notifying the coroner's office. Sgt. Leo Beebe and Deputies Victor Tucci and John Checkowski of the sheriff's department joined Trooper Wilder in the investigation. - Wife Followed Truck - Mrs. Stewart said that she is employed in the city and was on her way home, following the truck which her husband had driven to Syracuse to pay his income tax. Trooper Wilder reported that the truck did not follow the curve in the road, running up an embankment which turned it sharply back into the road, throwing Stewart out. The fact that the truck did not follow the sharp curve might indicate, the trooper said, that Stewart had been stricken some little distance from the curve. Besides his wife, Mr. Stewart is survived by a son, Arnold, 5, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stewart of Fabius; four brothers and three sisters, Edgar Stewart of Manlius, James Stewart of DeRuyter, and Terrance and Harry Stewart of Fabius; Mrs. Elizabeth Stewart of Fabius, Mrs. Gladys Ford of Morrisville, and Miss Arliene Stewart of Syracuse, a registered nurse. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
