Newspaper Obituary - June 25, 1911 Post-Standard - Syracuse, New York - Death Claims Guest of Watertown Family - Walter Ames, a Civil War Veteran of Richland, is Suddenly Stricken While Visiting Friends - Had Suffered from Ill Health for Several Months - Watertown, June 25 - While enjoying a visit at the home of friends here, Walter Ames, 76 years old, of Richland, a retired fanner and a veteran of the Civil War, suffered a stroke at 8 o'clock this morning which resulted in death a half hour later. Mr. Ames, accompanied by his wife, came here yesterday on the Club train, and they were spending a couple of days as guests of the Obleman family at No. 881 West Main street, before proceeding to Carthage, where they had planned to visit Mrs. William Sanders, a stepdaughter. Mr. Ames had been in poor health since March, although able to be about. Before leaving Richland yesterday he suffered from short breathing and consulted his physician. He felt better in the afternoon and decided not to postpone the trip here and to Carthage. He was walking towards the bathroom when suddenly stricken. Dr. J. A. Barnette was called, and later Coroner R. L. Smith heard the facts concerning the man's sudden death. Mr. Ames is survived by his wife; one son, Earl; of Richland; two brothers, Marshall Ames of Richland and Jewett Ames of Michigan, and a sister, Mrs. Martha Cash, of Norwich, besides two stepchildren. Clarence Spicer of Waterloo and Mrs. William Sanders of Carthage. The Remains win be taken to Richland tomorrow morning, where the funeral will be held at 8 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.
