The Act of Congress provided a pension to Civil War veterans that were "disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of the disability." He claimed his disability was rheumatism, that he contracted in January 1863 at Centerville VA. His request was rejected. He was awarded a monthly pension of $6.00 per month in July 1897.

On April 11, 1900 he reported for a medical examination. As a result of the medical report, his pension was increased to $8.00 per month.
