      Helen Constance MacSwan, formerly of Corvallis, died Friday in Oregon City. She was 83.

      She was born to Thomas and Helen White in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

      She married Iain C. MacSwan on Feb. 17, 1943. In 1955, they moved to Corvallis, where they lived for 49 years.

      Helen, or Peggy, as she was known by her family and close friends, worked as a medical transcriptionist for Student Health Services at Oregon State University for more than 20 years. She retired in 1984.

      She was active in the community and volunteered at the Chintimini Senior Center as a dispatcher for Dial-A-Bus, and at the Vina Moses Center.

      In 2004, she moved to Somerset Assisted Living in Gladstone, near the home of her daughter, Cathie. She also lived briefly at Mountain View Rehabilitation and Living Center in Oregon City.

      Helen enjoyed sewing, knitting, bridge and gardening. She liked to visit her family and friends in Canada, Alaska and Oregon. She was fond of the retirement years she spent in Point Roberts, Wash.

      Helen is survived by her children and their spouses, Neil T. and Marcia MacSwan of Nooksack, Wash., Catherine A. and Jesse Kappel of Gladstone, and Margot E. and Bill Henderson of Eagle River, Alaska; and grandchildren, Brian, Scott, Ryan and Caitlin.

      She was preceded in death by her husband, Iain; parents, Thomas and Helen White; sister, Gwen Derry; brother, William White; and two other brothers.

      She will be lovingly missed by her family and friends.

      A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at DeMoss-Durdan Funeral Home. A brief reception will follow at the funeral home.
