    • Newspaper Obituary - August 1, 1918 Sandy Creek News - Delbert W. Russell - Fallen In France - Grandson of Frank Russell, Veteran of Civil War - Many Relatives in Lacona and Boylston. - The services held in honor of Delbert W. Russell in the Methodist church at Altmar last evening were largely attended, the church being filled to over flowing. The relatives were seated in a body and the Brotherhood of the church to which Delbert belonged were present to pay their tribute of respect. Delbert Russell and his two brothers who are serving overseas are grandsons of Frank Russell, a veteran who resided in Sandy Creek, near the Ingersoll cheese factory and who served in the Civil War. His maternal grandfather, George Riley, also enlisted but did not see service as the war closed soon afterword. His uncle Frank Riley has for 22 years been in the U. S. army where hs is now serving overseas so far as the family know as an officer. His grandparents on the maternal side were George and Elizabeth Riley of Lacona and Bolyston. The mother of Delbert Russell was Rose Riley and her brothers are John Riley, who resides on the Ridge north of Lacona and Mrs. Bert Rowe of Bolyston and Miss Anna Riley of Watertown. The services were in charge of Rev. F. B. Clark, pastor of the church who offered prayer. Rev. C. A. Robinson of Orwell read the Scriptures and Rev. Charles T. Holcombe of Pulaski gave the address. He paid tribute to the patriotism of the parents who had given three sons to the army, To the country that had won so much for liberty in the Revolution and Civil Wars. He referred to the present conflict waged in behalf of suffering humanity on the Belgian and French front and how our hearts bled for the women and children of those devasted lands as well as for those who had found a grave beneath the waters of the ocean over whose waters the neutrality of nations prevails. He spoke of the touching scenes enacted in Pulaski when the boys departed for the front and the Godspeed that went with them, sustained in the belief that when they reached French soil something worth while for all this sacrifice would be forthcoming. Then was brought the conforting words of the Scripture; how the Father gave his only begotten son for us as we give our sons that the cause of righteousness and liberty may prevail. Besides his parents and sisters and brother he leaves a sweetheart who promised to wait his return and then become his wife, Miss Sadie Sherman of Altmar. Those present from here at this service were: Mr. and Mrs. John Riley, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Rowe, Miss Anna Riley, Watertown, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Bortles, cousins, Grant and Miss Flossie Baker, cousins, Mead Robbins, H. A. Myers, Pitt Barker, Roscoe Sargent, Mr. and Mrs. F. Dudley Corse, Miss Ellen H. Corse.
