    • Jay L. Upton Dies, Aged 91

      Jay L. Upton died Dec. 25, 1966 in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where he had been taken on Christmas Eve by Rescue 48 of Mannsville.
      Until that time, his son, Edward Upton, had been able to attend to his care at their home.

      Mr. Upton had reached the age of 91, having been born in Sandy Creek May 18, 1875, a son of Edward C. and Victoria Carr Upton. He had lived all his life in this town, where members of the Upton family had been among the early settlers.

      He was married Feb. 13, 1913 to Miss Selina Carr. She died Oct. 17, 1955. Mr. Upton is survived by one son, Edward Upton of Sandy Creek.

      In has active years, Jay L. Upton was a farmer, having been associated at first with his brother, the late Malcolm J. Upton in the operation of Upton Brothers' farm. Other brothers were the late Clarence Upton, Charles Upton and Earl Upton.

      He was a member of the Sandy Creek Methodist church, the Sandy Creek Grange, and for over 50 years belonged to Sandy Creek Lodge No. 564 F. & A.M. He served the lodge in the office of tiler for a number of years. In 1932-33 he served as a member of the Sandy Creek Board of Education.

      He took an active part in the Sandy Creek Fair for some years, and was a life member of the Holstein-Friesian Association of America.

      In the late 1920s he introduced the strain of Henri Camille Belgian stallions in this area and was head of the local association.

      A Masonic service was conducted at the Cleveland funeral home Tuesday evening by W.A. Hoag. The funeral service took place Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Dr. V. H. Hager, pastor of Sandy Creek Baptist church, being the officiating clergyman.

      Burial will take place in Woodlawn cemetery in the spring.
